A point of sale (POS) terminal is an essential tool for many types of businesses that integrate customer service. The acronym POS stands for ‘Point of sale’ or ‘Point of service’, and is the place where the transaction for the sale of products or services takes place. This type of equipment, which already has a built-in printer, is often used in restaurants, hotels, stadiums, casinos, retail shops, among others, and is a modern, computerised version of what we used to know as a ‘cash register’. In addition to the functionalities that cash registers have, POS equipment, being a computerised system, generally offers a series of options that optimise various stages of the sales and post-sales process, namely, greater speed and efficiency, offering various means of payment, monitoring of performance indicators, inventory management and automation of the invoicing process. Usually, a fixed POS terminal consists of a touch screen monitor, a small digital display (which indicates the amount to be paid to the customer), a cash register and a receipt or ticket printer. However, the evolution of this type of equipment has led to a greater diversity of models available on the market, and it is now possible to acquire a portable POS and take advantage of other benefits associated with mobility, while retaining after-sales management features and the ability to print. A printer or printing device is a component that functions as an auxiliary to a computer or computer network, printing text, graphics and images based on the information it receives. Its evolution over the years has given rise to a wide variety of options, with different features and functionalities. Among the different types of printing available, laser, inkjet, plotter and thermal printers stand out, the latter being the most commonly used for printing receipts, barcode labels or payment receipts. In the field of thermal printing, portable printers are the most common: they are practical, easy to transport and allow for streamlining various tasks for certain types of business. These types of printers also stand out for their bluetooth, mobile Internet and Wi-Fi connection technologies, which make it possible to dispense with connection cables between the equipment and the terminals/computers.
